Amy Schumer is happy she's left the 'narcissists' she used to date firmly in the past
In the comedian's new book, The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo, she gets candid about her personal life, including chapters on her abusive relationship with an ex-boyfriend, and her strained relationship with her mother who had an affair
She confessed to finding it difficult to write about her past experiences, especially recalling her dating history, but revealed she has finally found happiness with her new beau.
"I usually would go for narcissists who, you know, could never be happy," the 35-year-old said of the Chicago-based furniture designer. "(Ben's) just very supportive and loving and I think we're very proud of each other. He is so far removed from this business that it's really nice. "
Despite the huge interest in her new novel, Schumer is baffled people want to read about her life. "It's amazing I'm allowed in public. I have nothing to teach anybody or tell anybody," she said at the first night of her book tour in New York on Tuesday (16Aug16).
Her memoirs can be bleak, and at some times tragic - especially when she discusses her father's deteriorating health - but Schumer has fought back, and has a positive outlook on life.
"I'm not foolishly optimistic," she said. "I'm realistically optimistic. "I think things are going to be okay."
One person who has faith in the comedian is Hollywood icon Meryl Streep, who revealed recently she would love Schumer to play her in a future biopic. "I shrieked," she admitted, recalling her reaction to Streep's comments. "There's just no higher praise from a higher person."
