The tragic young nephew of England legend Paul Gascoigne has died after fighting his own battle with addiction.

The body of Jay Kerrigan, 22, was found at a tower block in the early hours.

Jay had lived with Anna, step dad Michael, a drummer and band promoter, and sister Harley, 20, in Gateshead.

The family received hundreds of messages of support on social media following the devastating news.

It is understood Jay had been working for environmental charity Groundwork North East.

In a message on Facebook, Michael wrote: "Broken hearts you've left behind, peacefulness you have found, stay safe our shining star, our beautiful son you're never far."

Jay posted messages which told of his own troubles with addiction.

In January he wrote: 'Addiction is a disease, I was born with it. I haven't smiled in years, I feel trapped. For heavens sake I've just came out of emergency heart surgery and now I'm back on it again.'

Earlier, he admitted to losing friends due to the troubles he had been through.

Jay's actress mum Anna, 49, spent years supporting Paul, 48, in his own battles with alcoholism, drug addiction and mental health problems.

In 2008 she went public to ask fans to stop buying him drinks for fear it would kill him. In 2013, Jay, then 19, made his own impassioned plea to his uncle to give up drink.

Just weeks ago he put a long, rambling post on Facebook about drugs and talked about suicide to escape his addiction.

Paramedics were called to Warwick Court, in Gazza's hometown of Gateshead in the early hours of Saturday.

Jay's cause of death is not known but police do not believe anyone else is involved
