Lil Wayne receives key to Louisiana city
Rapper Lil Wayne has been handed the key to the city of Lafayette in his native Louisiana.
The Lollipop hitmaker, real name Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr., was booked to perform at the University of Louisiana Lafayette on Monday night (18Apr16), and shortly before taking the stage, he met with city Mayor-President Joel Robideaux, who presented him with the symbolic key on a gold chain.
We want to present to you a very special key to the city that we made specifically for you," Robideaux said in video footage of the meeting, posted online. "One of a kind, nobody else has it... That's the only one in America. Thank you, man, for everything you do."
A beaming Wayne marvelled at the gold chain as he replied, "Thank you!", before exclaiming, "We made it!"
The honour was bestowed on Wayne in recognition of his extensive charity work, while the concert itself, arranged by bosses at Jay Z's streaming service Tidal, was a competition prize for college students, who donated nearly 7,000 water bottles to residents in Flint, Michigan, as part of a drive to get clean water to those struggling amid pollution problems in the city
