Drake's new album sells 630,000 copies in one day
The Hotline Bling hitmaker revealed the news on Friday (29Apr16) during his album release party at La Vie nightclub in Toronto, Canada, where he was celebrating with fellow Canadian Justin Bieber
"I got a text message that we sold, like, 630,000 something records in one night," the thrilled 29-year-old said. "That's the first time I've ever done that s**t, so thank you very much!"
Sources at Republic Records confirmed the figures to Billboard.com, estimating that Drake's fourth studio album is projected to sell more than 800,000 copies in the U.S. by 5 May (16), which would set a career-best sales week for the rapper.
He released Views, which includes collaborations with Rihanna, Future and PartyNextDoor, on Apple Music and iTunes on Thursday (28Apr16).
All of Drake's previous albums - Thank Me Later, Take Care and Nothing Was the Same - have debuted at number one, along with his mixtape If You're Reading This It's Too Late, and his 2015 collaboration with Future, What a Time to Be Alive.
If Views hits the projected target, it will become the 10th album to sell more than 800,000 copies in a single week in the past decade.
He will also become the first male artist to do so since Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience was released in 2013, selling 968,000 in one week. The last album to sell more than 800,000 in a week was Adele's 25, which was released in November (15).
Drake's success means Beyonce's U.S. album chart reign will be limited to one week. Her Lemonade debuted at number one on Sunday (01May16).
