US based Nigerian filmmaker, Foluke Olaniyi, last Tuesday at Silverbird Galleria, Victoria Island, premiered her debut feature film The Guest.
Starring the likes of Rita Dominic, Somkele Idhalama, Femi Jacons, Chika Chukwu and a host of others, the movie, according to the producer, was shot over 35 days.

“This is my first production in Nigeria. For the entire shoot, we spent about 35 days. For someone coming from the US, I had a lot of expectations. But fortunately, I was surrounded by a lot of like-minded and thoughtful people. And then I also got lucky in terms of the cast. Also, I was heavily supported by a group of young filmmakers,” Olaniyi stated.

The Guest is the story of a passionless but dedicated and faithfully married couple who take in an old friend. An affair soon begins between the husband and the friend, but when his adulterous partner starts to kill off members of their household who stands in the way of her getting what she wants the couple realize that they have it all in each other and that their family is worth ûghting for.
Speaking on her role in the movie, Somkele Idhalama said that she was drawn to the script because such a story we hadn’t been explored to the point of psychosis in a Nigerian context.

“That was what attracted me to the script. I had a Yoruba cast so playing a Yoruba woman wasn’t too hard. I had a very experienced cast to work with so every day was really interesting. It was really an honour to be among the likes of Femi, Rita and Chika. They were fantastic. They held my hands through out,” she said.
The Guest opened in cinemas across Nigeria last Friday.
