The Peoples Democratic Party has set aside August 15 for the screening of all aspirants to various positions in the party ahead of its national convention.
It has also fixed Tuesday for the screening appeal.
This was contained in a statement by a member of the National Caretaker Committee, Abdul Ningi, on Thursday.
The convention holds on August 17 in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
Among the aspirants for the chairmanship position of the party are a former Deputy National Chairman (South), Bode George, owner of the African Independent Television, Raymond Dokpesi, a former Minister of Education, Tunde Adeniran, and the party’s governorship candidate in the April 11, 2015 governorship election in Lagos State, Jimi Agbaje.
An unidentified party chieftain from Oyo State was also said to have picked the nomination form sold for N1 million.
It is speculated that a former governor of Ogun State, Gbenga Daniel, and a former Deputy National Chairman of the party, Uche Secondus, would join the chairmanship race.
The statement reads, “The Leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has directed that aspirants who have picked Nomination Forms to contest for various positions in the forthcoming National Convention holding in Port Harcourt, Rivers State on Wednesday August 17, 2016 are to note the following activities: Screening Committee – 15 August, 2016. Screening Appeal – 16 August, 2016
The statement said the screening would take place at the Rivers State secretariat of the PDP in Port Harcourt along Aba Road at 10 am each day.
It further requested all aspirants to present themselves to the Screening Committee with their original certificates, nomination form and a set of photocopy.
Meanwhile, the party has denied reports that the convention had been postponed, saying the August 17 date was sacrosanct.
A statement by a member of the National Caretaker Committee, Dayo Adeyeye, on Thursday, said it was not true that the Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee of the PDP, Ahmed Makarfi, had suspended or postponed the event to allow time for more reconciliation on the leadership crisis in the Party.
“The information is false, null and void and only exists in the imagination of the authors and originators of the rumour,” the statement said.
“For the umpteenth time, we reiterate there is no change to the August 17, 2016 Date slated for the PDP National Convention holding in Port Harcourt, Rivers State as approved by the Expanded Caucus of the Party in compliance with the Decision of the National Convention that reconvened itself within Ninety (90) Days.
“You will recall that the May 21st, 2016 National Convention in Port Harcourt that constituted the PDP National Caretaker Committee mandated it to organize and conduct another National Convention within 90 days from the Date of the last Convention. Therefore, the National Caretaker Committee has no power to extend the mandate given to it by the Port Harcourt National Convention and will not do so.”
The statement also said the caretaker committee “wishes to advise all stakeholders and the general public to ignore all rumours regarding the purported postponement of the forthcoming National Convention in Port Harcourt, Rivers State declaring that August 17, 2016 Date for the National Convention is sacrosanct and will hold as scheduled.”
It also enjoined all members of the party nationwide to work closely with the leadership towards a successful convention that would elect credible party leaders to fill in the vacant positions at the national level.
