APC sweeps Sokoto LG polls

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday cleared all contested positions in the Sokoto local government elections, according to the chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC), Alhaji Usman Abubakar.

Abubakar disclosed that the APC won in all the 22 local governments where elections were conducted with the exception of Gudu local government area (LGA) where election was suspended indefinitely.

Gudu LGA election was suspended following a discovery that the PDP and its logo were omitted from the ballot papers for that particular LGA.

While briefing newsmen at SIEC’s secretariat, Usman noted that the state had 23 LGs and 244 council wards, adding that in the chairmanship election, the APC won all the 22 local governments and 234 councillors out of the 244 contested. Gudu LGA, in which the poll was suspended, has 10 council wards.

But PDP supporters in the state have faulted the outcome of the election, saying it was a predetermined result and that elections did not hold in most places.

They therefore stated that they were getting ready to challenge the entire process in court.
