Mr Lanre Gentry, the incarcerated husband of Nollywood actress, Mercy Aigbe has had his hopes of regaining his freedom today dashed.
His lawyers and friends had been confident of securing his bail today after putting all the necessary requirements to secure his bail in place only to learn that all magistrates in Lagos were having a conference today and have suspended sitting.
Today makes it the seventh night he would spend in Kirikiri prison after he was arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Y.O. Aje-Afunwa, gave him a bail condition in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum but he hasn’t been able to meet the conditions until now.
He was arraigned after his wife, Mercy Aigbe accused him of assaulting her repeatedly. The charges against him in court read in part, “That you, Olanrewaju Gentry…on the same date, time and place, in the aforesaid magisterial district, did unlawfully assault one Mercy Aigbe, by beating her with blows all over her body, thereby committing an offence.
“That you did assault one Mercy Aigbe, by giving her blows on her nose and blood started gushing out, which also caused her grievous bodily harm, thereby committing an offence.”
