10 burnt to death in Lagos vehicles explosion

Two fuel-laden vehicles crashed and exploded on Monday night, killing 10 persons, including a baby.

They were burnt beyond recognition when a fully loaded 18-seater bus collided head on with a Mazda car on Gbaji Bridge, Iyana Yafin in Badagry, Lagos around 8.30pm.

It was gathered that 12 persons were injured and were rushed to the Badagry General Hospital.

The passenger bus which was coming from Seme border and driving against traffic rammed into the Mazda car marked KJA654XF with three persons on board.

All those in the car and seven others in the coaster bus marked LAR 279 DK were burnt beyond recognition.

According to the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), the bus drove against traffic to evade arrest by Customs officials.

It was gathered that the bus driver turned off his lights while driving against traffic to escape Customs men, who were at road blocks.

Both vehicles exploded on impact, causing a huge fire.

The inferno led to traffic congestion on the Badagry Expressway, as vehicles parked while the vehicles were burning.

The FRSC Badagry Unit Commander Fatai Bakare decried the commercial driver’s recklessness and called for tougher sanctions against motorists who flout traffic rules.

Lagos Police spokesperson Dolapo Badmos said seven persons were injured in the accident.

The bodies have been deposited in the morgue.
