Fanendo Adi ready for Super eagles against Egypt

The Portland Timbers striker was a surprise call up to the Nigeria squad for March’s Africa Cup of Nations qualification games against Egypt

Portland Timbers striker Fanendo Adi has expressed joy at his call up to the Nigeria national team ahead of this month’s Afcon qualifiers against Egypt.

The Super Eagles face the Pharaohs over two legs in what could determine their fate on March 25 and 29 in Kaduna and Alenxandria respectively.

Adi, who won the MLS Cup with Timbers last year, was one of the first timers named in the squad by interim coach Samson Siasia.

The 25-year-old could not hide his joy in a Goal interview.

“It feels amazing, it's great to be in the national team, it's a privilege and honour to wear the green and white shirt, absolutely amazing,” Adi told Goal.

It was not an entirely surprising call up as former coach Sunday Oliseh had shown interest in the Goal Nigeria Player of the Year 2015 nominee.

“I knew and heard the ex-coach was to come and watch me play but didn't know or expected to be on the list now. It brings me a lot of joy to be considered to represent Nigeria,” he said.

Nigeria trail Egypt in the standings and must earn at least four points in both matches to keep their hopes of returning to the continent’s biggest competition alive. Adi’s scoring instincts will be key to helping the Super Eagles earn the needed points.

“We can all add something positive to the growth of the team, on my part is to the coach, he has the final decision to make on how to play the players, but I believe I can add something positive to the team.”

“We [will] all work to win for the team, so what I can bring is of course to help us win as that's the most important aspect of the game, winning.”
